James Nares

Born in London in 1953, James Nares is a Modernist artist whose visual works tell stories of movement, repitition, and the passage of time. Widely recognized for expanding the boundaries of different media, James Nares has had an illustrious artistic career spanning five decades. Her work focuses on movement, rhythm and repetition expressed through music, film, painting, photography and performance. Nares’ paintings are typically characterized by a single stroke, applied with bespoke oversized brushes, or through the use of equipment repurposed from industrial applications. She makes her own brushes and sometimes applies the paint to the canvas while suspending herself from above. Nares’ creative process consists of a “perfect mix” of planning ahead and spontaneity. The subject of many solo exhibitions, Nares has work in prominent collections throughout the world including the Whitney Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. The Milwaukee Art Museum will be curating a major retrospective in 2019.
