Cheryl Ann Thomas

Chance and fragility come together in unexpected and elegant forms in Cheryl Ann Thomas’s scultpures. Her investigative process with finely-textured porcelain clay led her to push the limits of the material when creating high and thin vessels.  By building up elongated strands of coil upon coil, Thomas was able to make large columns that eventually collapsed into themselves.  She took the process a step further by combining two or more fired columns and re-fired them, discovering that they would reshape and re-fold into each other. Thomas limits her palette to soft tonalities, further accentuating the delicate and ephemeral nature of the process.   She currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
