Inspired by family travels for her mother’s fine art photography, Zaria Forman creates photorealistic drawings of the ocean and remote icy landscapes. Formally trained at Skidmore College, Zaria renders her luminescent drawings by applying pastel with her fingers to create captivating landscapes based on sketches taken during her travels, photographs and her own recollection and interpretation of the location. Climate change emerges as an underlying theme through her depictions of remote areas of the globe most directly affected by climate change; Greenland and the Maldives. “In my work I explore moments of transition, turbulence and tranquility in the landscape and their impact on the viewer,” she has said. “In this process I am reminded of how small we are when confronted with the powerful forces of nature.” Zaria has exhibited extensively in the US and her work can be seen in the set design for the Netflix series, “House of Cards”.
