Robert Sagerman

Robert Sagerman’s artistic practice is grounded in metaphysical traditions of Buddhism and Jewish mysticism.  For Sagerman, painting is a meditative manipulation intended to evoke a sense of the material and immaterial worlds. He manufactures his own pigments, mixes his colors and applies each gesture with a palette knife, creating densely textured surfaces. Keeping a log of his color mixes and time spent with each specific color, Sagerman can apply between 50 and 250 different colors to one work depending on size and composition. He counts each daub, hence the numeric titles in his works. The results are color fields or gradations that are not immediately apparent and only reveal themselves from a distance.
