Ellen Carey is an American photographer and lens-based artist known for her experiments with Polaroid and camera-less photography. Since the late 1970s, she has created innovative self-portraits, abstract images, and large-scale installations that explore light, color, and the limits of the photographic medium. Her work has been exhibited internationally in over 55 solo shows and hundreds of group exhibitions and is represented in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the George Eastman Museum.
