Nicky Broekhuysen is a South African contemporary artist whose work explores the intersection of language, technology, and spirituality using the visual metaphor of binary code. After earning her BFA from the ELAM School of Fine Arts at Auckland University in New Zealand, she began her signature practice of stamping 1s and 0s while living in Shanghai in 2006. Now based in the French Pyrenees, Broekhuysen creates large-scale colorfield paintings composed of thousands of hand-stamped binary marks that reference both digital language and natural forms. Her evolving interpretation of the “1” and “0” – from code to symbols of individuality and connectivity – reflects a nuanced approach to visual communication. Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and is held in collections such as the Microsoft Art Collection and Aria Fine Art Collection.
